The business took effect with the incorporation of Tanjung Offshore Services Sdn Bhd (TOS), which commenced operations in March 1990. TOS was then mainly involved with a Norwegian offshore drilling contractor namely, Odjfell Drilling & Consulting Co. for contract drilling of exploratory and development wells in East Malaysia.

In a conscious effort to provide more comprehensive services to the oil and gas industry, the Tanjung Group expanded its business to include supply of equipment and spare parts in the mid-1990s. Since then, the Tanjung Group has secured various exclusive agencies for its range of OEM engineering equipment such as gas turbines, compressors, pumps, switchgears and control valves from principals such as SIEMENS, ABB, Severn Glocorn and Flowguard which grants the Tanjung Group exclusive rights to sell and distribute its range of engineering equipment in Malaysia.

The Tanjung Group commenced its offshore support vessel services in May 1995 by securing a contract from Petronas Carigali, for the charter of an anchor-handling tug supply (“AHTS”) vessel from a third party. Since then, the Tanjung Group has acquired and expanded its fleet of vessels and currently has seven (7) wholly owned and newly built vessels namely MV Tanjung Huma (AHTS vessel), MV Tanjung Manis (supply vessel), MV Tanjung Pinang 1 (supply vessel), MV Tanjung Pinang 2 (supply vessel), MV Tanjung Pinang 3 (supply vessel) and MV Tanjung Pinang 4 (supply vessel) and MV Tanjung Dawai (AHTS vessel) under TOS and Tanjung Kapal Services Sdn Bhd (TKS). These vessels are equipped with modern equipment and facilities for anchor handling and various offshore supply services. In addition, the Tanjung Group has commissioned another three (3) new AHTS vessels, one (1) tug utility vessel and one (1) well testing and servicing vessel which will be completed and delivered by the end of FYE 2008 and early FYE 2009, in anticipation of increasing demand for Malaysian owned and operated vessels in the robust oil and gas industry.

In May 1996, Tanjung Maintenance Services Sdn Bhd (TMS) was incorporated to provide aftermarket sales support and maintenance services to the oil and gas industry such as manpower, scheduled and ad-hoc maintenance and repair works for offshore oil and gas platforms as well as onshore petrochemical plants in Malaysia. As various PSCs within Malaysia approach maturity, the Tanjung Group envisages that there is a growing need for various maintenance and repair works to be performed on the oil and gas platforms. Hence, the set up of the complete workshops/operations centre in Kemaman Supply Base and Teluk Kalong (Terengganu), Miri (Sarawak) and Labuan. There are other support offices in Manjung (Perak) and Pasir Gudang (Johor). These workshops/operation centres and support offices were set up to capitalise on increasing maintenance contracts from new and matured offshore platforms and power generation plants located in Malaysia.

To further enhance its reputation as the integrated oil and gas services provider in Malaysia, the Tanjung Group has incorporated other subsidiaries such as TKS, Tanjung PetroConsult Sdn Bhd, Tanjung NewEnergy Services Sdn Bhd, Tanjung Offshore Marine Services Sdn Bhd and Tanjung CSI Sdn Bhd as to streamline its range of services and market coverage.

The Tanjung Group has been providing its jack-up drilling services to Sarawak Shell since 1999 and has the relevant contacts and exclusive agency with Hercules Offshore Ltd in providing a diverse range of drilling services. In 2005, Tanjung invested in a 20% equity stake in Cendor Mopu Producer Ltd which operates the Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU) to enhance its presence in the drilling and production services.  In mid 2005, the Tanjung Group became the first Malaysian service provider to be awarded the lucrative MOPU contract for the development of marginal oilfields in Cendor oilfield, located off the coast of Terengganu, Malaysia from Petrofac.

In 2007, the Tanjung Group also successfully clinched two (2) drilling contracts for Murphy Oil through the provision of one (1) unit of “THE 208” jack up drilling rig and a Self Elevating Relocatable Facility (SERF) unit.

With its capabilities in providing the MOPU and other drilling facilities to enhance the fast extraction of first oil, the Tanjung Group envisages to be the market leader in the development of marginal oilfields in Malaysia.

Todate, the Tanjung Group has grown to become a reputable integrated oil and gas service provider within the Malaysian oil and gas industry. It holds all the necessary licences issued under PETRONAS and other authorities, and has continuously secured various contracts from oilfield operators in Malaysia including, amongst others, Petronas Carigali, Petronas Gas, Petronas Dagangan, Petronas Penapisan, BASF Petronas Chemicals, ExxonMobil, Sarawak Shell, Sabah Shell, Petrofac, Nippon Oil, Talisman and Murphy Oil.
